We've never had a separate study/library before. I'm happiest in this room when visiting children come and head straight for their bookshelf, and we sit reading together. Or when the books are in order and I've got an hour or two free to read and can go straight to just the right book, and it's quiet like the public libraries of my childhood were.
My husband used the word sanctuary - which is a lovely concept. It felt like a sanctuary recently when we had an electrician doing work in the kitchen, loft and sitting room and I shut myself in here and thought about and sorted my books for a whole day.
I did pretty it up for a photograph, which reminded me of another strategy I used to have to help me tidy up. With the big weekly shop I'd buy a lovely bunch of flowers, then before unpacking the shopping or doing any of the housework, I'd take a few enjoyable minutes to arrange them, put them somewhere prominent then make the rest of the room live up to the flowers......
